Camping In And Around The Sleeping Bear Dunes

The Sleeping Bear Dunes region provides a number of options for campers.

In the National Lakeshore, the National Park Service offers camp sites with electricity, showers, and modern restrooms; more rustic campsites without electricity or showers with vault restrooms; and primitive camping on the mainland, as well as, North and South Manitou Islands (please keep in mind the water pump has been removed from the Weather Station Campground on South Manitou island; water is no longer available). The islands can be reached via passenger ferry, operated by Manitou Island Transit out of Leland. For more more information, visit Manitou Island Transit. There are additional fees for camping and for passenger ferry.

Private campgrounds are also available in most of the communities in the region. Like the campgrounds within the park, they vary dramatically in terms of facilities and cost.

For more information, visit Campgrounds.

Important

Although discussed at the link above, it is important to note that as of February 2007, a major change was made throughout the National Park System in regards to reservations. Essentially, all reservations will now be made through a new system, recreation.gov. This service was created with the goal of simplifying trip planning. To make use of it, campers wishing to reserve a site should call 1.877.444.6777 or visit recreation.gov.
