It’s the first day of spring in Northern Michigan. Usually, this time of year brings a certain kind of excitement. The kind where you wake up to a little more sunlight streaming through the window, the sun stays awake past its recent 5 pm bedtime, and the snow starts to melt just enough to reveal hints of green.

Blizzard March 2026This year, it looks a little different. Just last weekend, Northern Michigan was hit with what felt like one final, dramatic reminder that winter isn’t quite ready to leave us. Inches turned into feet, and suddenly everything was covered again—roads, rooftops, the same places that just days before were beginning to thaw. It’s the kind of snow that makes you question if spring is really on its way or if we’ve somehow been transported back to January.

It’s what many of us know all too well as “fake spring.” (Banner image: Sleeping Bear Bay at Glen Haven, Sun, March 8th) That brief stretch of time where it feels like we’ve made it through the hardest part, only to be pulled right back in. And while it can be frustrating, it’s also become part of the rhythm of living here. Almost expected.

But even with two feet of snow on the ground, there’s something about today that brings a sense of excitement. Because in Northern Michigan, spring isn’t just a date, it’s a feeling. And when it finally arrives, you start to feel it.

The way the air feels softer and has that familiar, indescribable spring smell. There’s a certain crispness, even if it’s still cold. And then come the things we really look forward to.

Finding MorelsThe first being Morel season. There’s something about it that feels almost like a tradition passed down quietly over time. The anticipation, the early morning walks through the woods, the excitement of spotting that first one hidden beneath the leaves. It’s one of those things that makes spring feel earned.

Welcome spring with wine tasting, cherry blossoms, concerts and more! You can’t think of spring without thinking of the flowers. The daffodils and cherry blossoms are among two one of the first real signs that winter is finally behind us. Bright, simple, and usually on time. After months of muted, dreary colors, the bright colors begin to reappear and remind us why we love to live in Northern Michigan.

And of course, everything else that follows. The trees slowly filling back in, the return of long lake days that will soon come, and that familiar shift where everything just feels a little lighter.

Right now, it might not look like spring. In fact, it looks like the dead of winter, just with a confusing date on the calendar. But if there’s one thing we know about Northern Michigan, it’s that change can happen quickly. And when it does, it makes these snow storms and frigid temperatures feel worth it.

So while we wait (a little longer than usual), we can still hold onto what’s coming. Because soon enough, the snow will melt, the ground will soften, and spring will arrive the way it always does—subtly, but all at once.
