It’s the end of an era for Overlook #9 at Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive in Empire, Michigan. While the overlook is
still open to the public, the iconic and beloved boardwalk that has been the muse of thousands of images has unfortunately been taken down this spring. Shifting dunes, erosion, and strong winds threatened the stability and safety of the wooden platform, and after this past winter, the western pilings were no longer touching solid ground. Because of this, the decision was made to remove the platform entirely.
Before you get too comfortable with this change, there are talks about rebuilding the platform. Those plans would be included in a five-year plan starting in 2028 and could include restrooms, additional parking, and an accessible pathway. There’s no telling if the new plans for a structure will replicate the previous platform, but we can hope to at least have something similar.
Pierce Stocking will still be home to those views you know and love, but there’s no doubt it’s going to feel a bit different. I made a trip Up North this past weekend and had to stop and see the new overlook. The image below shows the spot where the structure used to stand.
