Volunteers must be able to work 32 hours a week for at least six weeks. Duties include greeting visitors, providing interpretive tours of the lighthouse, light cleaning and some trail work. If you ever wondered what living in a lighthouse would be like, then the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore might have the perfect volunteer opportunity for you. Job perks include spectacular views of Lake Michigan, the night sky and an once-in-a-lifetime experience you’ll never forget.
Some duties of the volunteers in this position include: greeting visitors and conducting guided tours of the lighthouse and surrounding structures; hiking island trails and conducting light trail work; notifying supervisor when hazardous conditions exist; working on maintenance projects with other volunteers; and more.
A minimum availability of six weeks in the summer of 2015 is required to apply for this position. Lighthouse volunteers are expected to work a minimum of 32 hours per week in exchanged for transportation to and from the island and park housing (minus bedding). Electricity and water are available of South Manitou, but no other services like restaurants or a grocery store are available on the island.
