Search for the Westmoreland (Shipwreck)

December 2, 2011
Details surrounding the history, legend and exciting 2010 discovery of one of the Great Lakes’ most sought-after shipwrecks will be disclosed during the Empire Area Heritage Group’s Dec. 2, free public program at the Empire Township Hall.

Beginning at 7 p.m. Ross Richardson, a Lake Ann diver and a 10-year former board member of the Michigan Shipwreck Research Associates, will share his extensive research on and incredible discovery of the ‘Westmoreland.’ The 160-foot passenger steamer sank more than 150 years ago in the icy waters off what is known now as the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

The ship, with 34 passengers and crew, was rumored to have been carrying whiskey and gold coins when she went down in December, 1854 – a tale that launched over a dozen expeditions in the ensuing years to find her and her treasures. Only 17 people were saved during the tragic event.

Richardson solved the mystery of the ship’s whereabouts using history books, old newspapers and what he calls “a little bit of hard work.” He found the wreck in July 2010 – sitting upright, bow and arches intact – in an uncharted hole.

The local diver has spent the last decade looking for and documenting shipwrecks off the state’s west coast. He has worked with David Trotter and Clive Cussler’s NUMA (National Underwater and Marine Agency) Team, is part of the Benzie Area Public Safety Dive Team and is a special deputy with the Benzie County Sheriff’s Department.

The Westmoreland project was partially funded by a grant from the Great Lakes Shipwreck Research Foundation, Inc. For more about the project, visit www.michiganmysteries.com.

A goodwill offering will be accepted at the door during the event and free beverages and popcorn will be served. For more information about Friday’s program, email empiremuseum@centurytel.net

Each member is a virtuoso, yet the music is accessible, melodic and appealing. George Cole is a guitarist, vocalist, composer, arranger. The music of George Cole arrives fully formed on the wings of a worn and beaten Selmer guitar. With his well-cut suit and handmade guitar George serves a little slice of heaven with his songs. You will hear the divine vocals of Hale Baskin, amazing violinist Stephan Dudash, propulsive rhythm guitarist Jimmy Grant, and the note perfect upright bass work of Christopher Bastian.

New Year's Eve Cherry-T Ball Drop

December 31, 2010
Downtown Traverse City will have yet another exciting event this winter. The 2nd Annual Cherry-T Ball drop is scheduled on New Years Eve 2010. “It will be like Times Square, just bit smaller with a Northern Michigan feel,” jokes Brian Sweebe, one of the organizers of the event. “We are going to have a giant Cherry drop from the sky as the clock strikes midnight,” says Brian.

The 200 block of Front Street, downtown Traverse City will be blocked off at 6:00 pm New Years Eve. The street will be cleared and a stage and tents will be erected. A live band will take the stage at 10:30 pm. A crane will reach over to the middle of Front Street and the cherry will drop to the timing of the end of 2010.

Although there is no admission for the event, Goodwill Industries will be onsite collecting can goods and personal hygiene items for the local needy. “We wanted to make sure this was totally a non-profit event and that it will help a local charity,” states Brian, “everything we are doing will be run by volunteers and paid for from donations from the community and sponsors.”

Talk About Art with Char Bickel

January 21, 2012
Fiber artist Char Bickel opens the 2012 “Talk About Art” series Thursday, January 26, 7:30 p.m., at the Glen Arbor Art Association. The GAA is located on Studio Lane, across from The Cherry Republic.

Bickel, a Northport resident, creates hand painted silk collages, a technique she developed over the course of her 20-year practice as a studio artist and teacher. Ranger-Led Snowshoe Hikes in Sleeping Bear Dunes

February Weekends
Explore Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore) on snowshoes this winter! Join Park Rangers for a guided snowshoe hike this holiday season and every Saturday throughout the winter. The first hike of the season will be on Thursday, December 29 at 1:00 p.m. Thereafter, regularly scheduled Saturday snowshoe hikes will start up again on Saturday, January 7 at 1:00 p.m. Meet at the National Lakeshore Visitor Center in Empire. National Cherry Festival

July 2 - 9, 2011
Sometime around 1910 cherry growers in the Grand Traverse area began to hold informal “blessing of the blossoms” ceremonies each year at blossom time in May. By 1925 local businesses started to partner with area growers to promote the growing cherry industry. By 1935 the festival was so successful it was expanded to a three-day event.

The National Cherry Festival continues to grow every year. There are over 150 events taking place each year! From the Air Show featuring the U.S NAVY Blue Angels, Bayside Music Stage, and Junior and Cherry Royale Parades to the Turtle Races, Princess Tea and cherry pit spit contest, you can be sure there will be fun for all ages in Traverse City.

Events include music, shows, fun for kids, demonstrations, and so much more. The events begin the first Saturday in July and conclude on the second Saturday in July with a fireworks celebration.

Guests arrive by car, boat, and bicycle. Once here, Leland is a great "walking around" town. All of the shops, restaurants, galleries, and museums are located within a short distance. There is easy access to public beaches, boat launches on each lake, and a river connecting the two.

The dark skies of the National Lakeshore were recently hailed as one of the ten best in the entire National Park System. “Just as the parks are dedicated to preserving landscapes, cultural sites, and habitat for wildlife, so are they concerned about overhead resources - particularly the kind of dark skies that reveal the beauty of the nighttime firmament,” declares National Geographic’s newly released Ten Best of Everything National Parks. Superintendent Dusty Shultz noted, “Many of our visitors come from cities where they rarely, if ever, get to see the Milky Way. Looking out over Lake Michigan, they are awestruck by the density of the constellations in view.” Shultz added, “We are pleased and honored to be working with the Grand Traverse Astronomical Society on this series of star parties and know the public will marvel at what they can see through the lenses of those fabulous telescopes.”

The public is invited to join us on this fun and educational night on Saturday, July 30. Park at Stop #2 on the Scenic Drive (Picnic Mountain) and follow the sidewalk down to the overlook. This will prevent lots of headlights interfering with the stargazing. The event, which begins at 9:00 p.m., will be offered just in time to also watch the sunset. Society members will have their telescopes out until 10:30 p.m. Dress for the weather and bring a flashlight for the walk back to your car.

All park ranger-led programs are free. Participants need only purchase the park entrance pass or have an annual pass displayed on their vehicle to join in the fun. Please call 231-326-5134, ext. 328, for details

1812 Tallship Visits Northport

August 18, 2011
4:30pm - 6:30pm in Northport Marina.
The 122-foot square foot tall ship Privateer Lynx visits Northport. All law-abiding and loyal citizens are urged to be vigilant and alert to her presence along the coast. Prepare to board her in the afternoon hours.

The 114 ton Lynx is an interpretation of a privateer or naval schooner from the War of 1812. She is fitted with period ordnance and flies pennants and flags from the 1812 era making her one of the first ships to defend our freedom. The Lynx crew wears period dress and operates the ship in keeping with the maritime traditions of early 19th Century America.

Lynx represents a "letter of Marque" Baltimore Clipper, considered to be among the finest privateer schooners ever built. Because of their swiftness and maneuverability, these ships were most effective as blockade runners and offensive weapons of war. Students and adults will recognize the War of 1812 as a significant element of American heritage and as a turning point in the development of our national identity. The educational early American history and science programs that are taught aboard Lynx meet specific State Standards.
The Privateer Lynx offers Educational Public Ship Tours and Sail Adventures during the Frankfort visit. Climb aboard and step back in time to relive history and feel the adventure. Join the crew and hoist the sails, steer the ship, fire the main battery of six-pounder carronades and experience first hand life aboard a traditional, square topsail schooner.

Trivia tidbit: The Privateer Lynx was hired to train the cast and crew of the hit movie Pirates of the Caribbean.
A private reception from 4:30-6:30pm, hosted by Sweetwater Challenge, a non-profit based in Northport includes hors d'oeuvres from The Garage Bar and Grill and local wine. Tickets are $25, available throughout the County.

Comedian Brian Regan

October 2, 2011
At the Traverse City Opera House.

Critics and peers agree: Brian Regan has distinguished himself as one of the premier comedians in the country. The perfect balance of sophisticated writing and physicality, Brian fills theaters nationwide with fervent fans that span generations.
On December 7, Brian released his highly anticipated second album, “All By Myself,” as a digital download only available through his website. Releasing two critically acclaimed hour Comedy Central specials and DVD’s in as many years - 2008’s “The Epitome of Hyperbole,” and 2007’s “Brian Regan Standing Up” - Brian has set a standard of excellence that others continually try to follow. “The Epitome of Hyperbole” made its CMT debut on March 9.
Brian’s non-stop theater tour has visited more than 80 cities each year since 2005 and continues through 2011. It is the quality of his material, relatable to a wide audience and revered by his peers, which continues to grow Brian’s fan base. In March of 2010, Brian broke the record for the most consecutive shows by a comedian at Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City with five sold out performances. The previous record was four shows set by Jerry Seinfeld in 2005.
With his first appearance on “The Late Show with David Letterman” in 1995, Brian solidified his place on the show and has now made more than 20 appearances. A dorm room favorite, Brian’s 1997 CD, “Brian Regan Live,” has sold over 150,000 copies and consistently charts in iTunes Top Ten Comedy Albums.

Author Ruth Reichl of Tender at the Bone

October 19, 2011
Reception for the Author: 6pm
Presentation and Book Signing: 7pm
TC READS has designated April through October as reading months and TC Reads events will culminate with an appearance by author, Ruth Reichl at the City Opera House on October 19th. Collaborative events will be planned with the local Traverse City culinary community.
Reichl is known for her work as food critic for the New York Times and editor of Gourmet Magazine. She was born and raised in New York City, studied at the University of Michigan and University of California/Berkeley. The Seattle Times has described Reichl as “one of the most influential figures in the food world”.
At an early age, Ruth Reichl discovered that "food could be a way of making sense of the world…”If you watched people as they ate, you could find out who they were." Her deliciously crafted memoir, Tender at the Bone, is the story of a life determined, enhanced, and defined in equal measure by a passion for food, unforgettable people, and the love of tales well told. Beginning with Reichl's mother, the notorious food-poisoner known as the Queen of Mold, Reichl introduces us to the fascinating characters who shaped her world and her tastes, from the gourmand Monsieur du Croix, who served Reichl her first soufflé, to those at her politically correct table in Berkeley who championed the organic food revolution in the 1970s. Spiced with Reichl's infectious humor and sprinkled with her favorite recipes, Tender at the Bone is a witty and compelling chronicle of a culinary sensualist's coming-of-age.
Reading Tender at the Bone will be a literary feast for TC Reads participants. Since the publication of Tender at the Bone, Reichl has published other memoirs including Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise, and most recently, For You, Mom. Finally. Reichl is currently editor-at-large at Random House, and a judge on Bravo’s Top Chef Masters.
TC Reads celebrates the joys of reading and the common threads that unite us as a community by encouraging everyone to read and discuss one book. For further information on TC READS or Tender at the Bone and for upcoming events and reading group dates, visit tcreads.org.
Special notes: Reception for the Author 6 pm, City Opera House. Presentation/Book Signing 7 pm, City Opera House

Shakespearean style. Each of the players has brushed up on his "thee's" and
"thou's" to bring you an evening of off-the-cuff comedy using the language and
themes of William Shakespeare. Any hour could be filled with power struggles,
star-crossed lovers, sprites, kings, queens, princesses, sword-playing, rhyming
couplets, asides, insults, persons in disguise and all that we've come to expect
from the pen of the Great Bard.

An Evening with Jeffrey Eugenides

October 20, 2011
**SPECIAL NOTE: This lecture is taking place at Lars Hockstad Auditorium. Purchase tickets at The City Opera House (on line, phone and at the COH Box Office)
Jeffrey Eugenides is an American Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and short story writer. Born in Detroit, he went on to earn writing degrees from Brown and Stanford Universities before launching his career as a novelist. He gained national attention when his 1993 novel, “The Virgin Suicides,” was adapted into a critically acclaimed film starring Kirsten Dunst by Sophia Coppola in 1999. Eugenides’ next book, “Middlesex,” exploded onto the publishing scene in 2002, selling more than three million copies, winning the Pulitzer Prize for fiction and the Ambassador Book Award, and topping several “best-of-year” lists. The novel was also an official Oprah Book Club pick.
Nine years later, Eugenides is preparing to release his long-awaited third novel, entitled “The Marriage Plot” (out October). Already garnering rave reviews from critics, who are calling it Eugenides’ best novel to date, the book has been described as a “brilliant, funny and heartbreaking novel about the glories and vicissitudes of young love.” Following a triangle of friends from college into the complicated realm of adulthood, Eugenides writes with irony and wit about a generation finally beginning to grow up. Eugenides is a proud Michigander who says he has a “perverse love” for his hometown of Detroit and who often works with organizations to support young writers. The evening will conclude with a reception and book signing with the author.

Swingshift and the Stars

October 21, 2011
2nd Competition Event.
After years of attending and performing at charitable events, Judy Harrison, lead singer of SwingShift and founder of High Impact Productions, Inc. knew that a fresh concept was required to re-invigorate the non-profit fundraising scene in our community; a friendly competition that would again attract people to participate with and donate to local organizations that desperately need our help to continue to help those in need.
Adding a feel-good twist to the wildly popular "Dancing with the Stars" model, she set the stage for SwingShift and the Stars, a dynamic, inventive, dance off to benefit area non-profits. Six local celebrities paired with six local dance instructors have pledged to sacrifice sore feet and hours of practice time, to entertain an audience and encourage vote donations.
In a series of five live performances the audience will have the privilege of voting for their favorite couple for a minimum donation of $5 to go towards one of the six charities selected by the competing couples. Voting donation envelopes will be given to each attendee as they enter the event. There will be a spot to mark which dance couple they are voting for and charity to which they are donating.
At the live performances, voters are encouraged to donate as much as they would like to the charity of their choice, $5 is only a minimum starting point. Although you can only vote for your favorite couple at one of the five live events, donations will also be accepted online, from this website, as well as at all performanes.
This year's benefitting charities:
Child and Family Services
Grand Traverse Conservation District
Host Homes for Homeless Youth
The March of Dimes
The Ryan Dobry Diabetes Charity
VSA Arts of Michigan - Grand Traverse Area

Haunted Hayrides at Black Star Farms

October 21 & 22 and 28 & 29, 2011
Miles of wooded trails, old barns and a bonfire area make the farm in Suttons Bay a perfect venue for haunted hayrides. As the grape harvest is just beginning the rest of the farm also begins to take on a new look as the staff prepare for the Halloween festivities slated for Oct. 21, 22, 28 & 29 from 7 – 10 pm.

Participants will get on a wagon that will take them into the dark woods and old orchards on the farm. Along the ride they will encounter various scary scenes developed and acted by the West Senior High Thespian Society. Scenes include wicked clowns, a mad butcher, insane bats, a crazy doctor, zombies from below and much more. There are even rumors that a headless horseman frequently rides the same trail…

The trail rides are approximately 10-15 minutes long and are $10 per person. Due to the subject matter of the scenes and the surprises lurking in the woods the rides are recommended for those 12 years and older as well as individual who appreciate a good scream. A bonfire will also be going to warm the extremities and keep the vampires away from those waiting to enter the forest.

Black Star Farms will be working with theater students from West Senior High to produce and implement the various scenes. A portion of the ticket sales will be donated to the student thespian society.

The farm in Suttons Bay is home to the Inn at Black Star Farms, Hearth & Vine Café, and the Tasting Room/Winery. The event is open to the public and will last until 10 pm. Cider, mulled wine, and graveside chili will be served at the Hearth & Vine Café as well.

Chamberlin, Fort Frances and Friends

October 23, 2011

Chamberlin is the biggest band from Vermont that no one there has ever really heard of. As their debut album Bitter Blood (Roll Call/EMI) drops, the eight-month-old act finds themselves criss-crossing the country in the midst of national tours, having played but a handful of shows in their home state. Up in their cabin, Chamberlin wrote a record stained with the influence of bonfires, harsh winters, geographical isolation and the women that seem to run perpendicular to their lives. From the electric opening track, "Fools" – a stormy, scathing rebuke of two lovers – to the resolute, mostly a capella "Sixty Days," the nine songs on Bitter Blood are photographs, or perhaps photograms, of Chamberlin's world, with varying degrees of aperture. Despite its title, Bitter Blood is not without pleasantries. For the band, while contemplative, is not jaded. "Turn Around," the B3-laden third track, may even sound best as a drink-in-hand, late-night back porch sing-along. After all, "bitter blood," as the title track asserts, "breaks like a cigarette."

Fort Frances
What initially began as a solo project for singer/songwriter David McMillin gradually
transformed into Fort Frances: a three-piece band whose debut album represents
more than two years of drawing their own map for musical exploration. With an all-
