Talk about Art - Altered Books, Pam Yee Gianola
April 29, 2010
The Glen Arbor Art Association’s Talk About Art series will feature book artist, Pam Yee who will speak at 7:30PM, Thursday, April 29 at the GAAA. She will talk about altered books, which are usually created from discarded hardbound books that have been saved from the landfill and recreated to become coffee table books. Yee’s talk will also touch on her own handmade books and she will bring samples of both.
Pam Yee is a mixed media artist who began making cards for family and friends. She has worked in fibers (knitting), wood (jewelry, books, furniture & mobile), paper (books & cards), plexiglas (books), and leather and metal (books & jewelry).
Pam is an avid recycler and uses discarded objects in her altered books along with all manner of mixed media. Inks, paint, rubber stamps, paint palettes, fibers, photos, images from magazines, new and old newspapers, cardstocks and anything that isn't mailed down may be used in her altered books. She also makes hand bound books from simple folded books of paper to Coptic stitched books with leather, wood, metal, clay, and Plexiglas covers.
She was Co-President of ISABA (International Society of Altered Book Artists) from 2002-2004 and President from 2004-2007. ISABA is an online organization whose mission is to promote altered books as an art form. Pam has taken classes around the country and teaches locally and in Hawaii. She lives in the woods of Honor, MI with her painter husband, Ron Gianola.
The Talk About Art series gives the community an opportunity to meet some of our many accomplished local artists and gain an appreciation and understanding of art and how it is created. The talks are free and open to the public.

Talk about Art - Watercolor Artist, Edee Joppich
May 6, 2010
Watercolor artist, Edee Joppich will wrap up this year’s Talk About Art series at 7:30PM, Thursday, May 6 at the Glen Arbor Art Association. She is a painter, teacher, juror and since 1980, the owner of Joppich’s Bay Street Gallery in Northport. She will candidly share the “agony and the ecstasy” of her forty-five years as a productive, dedicated painter. In showing and discussing her work, she will discuss the sources of her inspiration and ideas; how they are developed into works of art and how she manages to find studio time with the demanding schedule of her busy “other” life.
Edee Joppich received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Marygrove College, Detroit, followed by graduate studies at Wayne State University. Art councils, museums, universities and professional galleries have hosted her 48 one woman shows. Edee’s paintings have been accepted in over 200 regional, national and international exhibits, winning many awards. Honors include a fellowship from the International Society of Experimental Artists, a Signature membership in the National Collage Society, an Artist in Residency from the city of Farmington Hills, Michigan and the Michigan Council for the Arts. Her works are included in five art books published nationally and internationally as will as corporate and private collections nationwide. She has travelled widely and painting trips provide ideas and inspirations for her collage and watercolor paintings.
Edee has been teaching for over 40 years, sharing her joy of art and life with thousands of students. This fall Edee Joppich will teach a watercolor workshop for the Glen Arbor Art Association at The Homestead Resort, October 4-7.

Talk about Art - Sculptor, Dewey Blocksma
February 18
The third artist to speak for the Talk About Art series will be sculptor, Dewey Blocksma at 7:30PM, Thursday, February 18 at the Glen Arbor Art Association. Dewey will show a few photos of his fascinating journey as an artist and he will give a feel for the folk, outsider and other art traditions which influence his work. He will share some folk art pieces from his own collection and some of his recent sculptures.
Dewey Blocksma was born on an air force base near Amarillo, Texas in 1943. After the war, he found himself in Lahore, Pakistan where his father helped establish a hospital in 1948. Home schooled, he soon found himself in charge of drawing all the animals for a global mural. Making his own kites and toys became the foundation upon which his art was later constructed, just as Calder’s Circus became the inspiration for mobiles and stabiles.
Dewey attended Northwestern Medical School in the heart of Chicago where he would learn anatomy, window shop on Michigan Avenue, haunt the Chicago Art Institute and demonstrate at the Democratic National Convention in 1968. After medical school Dewey trained in surgery and then took a break from his education to spend a few weeks at the Worcester Museum School of Art and nine months on a Norwegian Square Rigged School Ship where he was ship surgeon and instructor of biology and art, sailing from Bergen, Norway to Dakar, Senegal and back to Bergen via the Azores.
Starting in 1972 Dewey lived in Ann Arbor commuting to Jackson, Michigan, where he worked as one of the first full time ER Physicians. He bought a grist mill where he began making things again. Later in the 70’s as part of a transition to art he began working in hospitals all over Michigan including a 30 day locum tenens in Northport where he soon discovered Tamarack Gallery, a gallery where he has shown to this day. About 1980 he left the practice of medicine eventually settling in Beulah.
Dewey showed for many years at the Xochipilli Gallery in Birmingham, Michigan and at the Judy Saslow Gallery in Chicago. His work appears in the collections of the Dennos Museum, Johnson Toy Collection, NY; MGM Studios, LA: Time-Life Collection, Detroit and the Leo Burnett Advertising Agency of CA.
The Talk About Art series gives the community an opportunity to meet some of our many accomplished local artists and gain an appreciation and understanding of art and how it is created. The talks are free and open to the public.

Talk about Art - Professor Sada Omoto
March 18
The fourth program in the Talk About Art series will feature retired art history professor, Sada Omoto who will speak at 7:30PM, Thursday, March 18 at the Glen Arbor Art Association. His talk is titled, “Regionalism Revisited” focusing on art, artists, and the culture of Northwest Lower Michigan.
Born and raised near Seattle and educated in the Midwest (Oberlin, Michigan State, and Ohio State),
Sada Omoto taught art history at Bradley University, Wayne State, and Michigan State. Since moving to Leland in 1997, he has concentrated on painting at the Old Art Building in Leland. His early background has made him sensitive to the diversity of art history traditions which has shaped his creativity as an artist in Northwest Lower Michigan.
Sada Omoto’s March 18th talk at the Glen Arbor Art Association will explore the question of how we identify and relate to the geography, the history, the countryside and the Big Lake, a constant reminder of this region. This uniqueness cries out to our artists to paint, sketch, document and preserve this wonderful Northwest Lower Michigan. In art history texts, “Regional Art” ordinarily is applied to the triumvirate of Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, and John Steuart Curry, and appears to disregard those artists whose works seem to be outside the traditional art history category of “Regional Art.” What of the countless names of less recognized artists and their works in this part of Michigan?
The Talk About Art series gives the community an opportunity to meet some of our many accomplished local artists and gain an appreciation and understanding of art and how it is created. The talks are free and open to the public. The final two in the series are Pam Yee, Altered Books (April 29) and Edee Joppich, Color (May 6).
The Glen Arbor Art Association is located across from Cherry Republic behind Lake Street Studios in Glen Arbor. For more information call 231/334-6112 or e-mail info@glenarborart.org.
